PUE has collaborated by providing technological solutions to speed up development times without increasing costs

In this article we are going to explain why data is the key to digital transformation, through the success story of CBRE in the real estate sector.

CBRE Group Inc, listed on the NYSE and included in the Fortune 500 and S&P 500, is the leading international real estate consulting and services company (according to 2020 revenues). It employs more than 100,000 professionals in more than 100 countries. In Spain it has been operating since 1973, offering real estate services through 9 offices located in the main cities of the country.

Challenges

As we said, data is the key to digital transformation in the real estate industry. This is why the CBRE Spain team has been committed to cutting-edge technologies in  the data lifecycle management for several years.

One of the key initiatives for this commitment was to have a single, centralized repository where to ingest, treat, model and serve the data related to the real estate market.

Scalability is fundamental in the new digital world, so CBRE Spain proposed to PUE an end-to-end Data Warehouse project, allowing the exploitation of data from any area of the company.

The main challenge that CBRE Spain and PUE faced during the conception, execution and exploitation of the Data Warehouse was the fact that the data explosion context forced it to have a functional Minimum Viable Product in less than 5 months. And all this in a context of global pandemic, in which the teams had to work 100% remotely.

CBRE, as a global company, demands very high standards of quality, security and scalability that have been maintained throughout the project specifications, from architecture to continuous integration.

Solutions

The modernization of the Data Warehouse involved moving from an on-premise architecture to a 100% Cloud architecture. The project not only contemplated technical aspects, but also operational and team organizational matters, both in terms of technology and data.

CBRE Spain and PUE relied on Open Source technologies that allow speeding up development times without increasing the cost, offering the guarantee of being able to cover present and future business needs with the most innovative technology. All this without additional licensing.

To carry out the project, Scrum and DevOps methodologies were used, with continuous integration and deployment to improve time-to-production and increase collaboration and cooperation between all the teams working on this platform.

Successful results

CBRE’s main objectives in this process were:

  • Assessment, architecture design, and definition of the Open Source tools to be implemented.
  • Installation of the tools and configuration of the platform.
  • Integration with the Data Warehouse.
  • Development projects for the integration of the DevOps layer and the transformation and processing of ETL processes using Spark.
  • Enablement Training for CBRE’s Administration and Development teams, with the objective of providing training in the use and administration of the system and tools integrated into the platform.
